4:36 pm - Art Challenge 8 - The request
You should know the drill by now.

I will try and draw something for the first person to reply with the request.

2 weeks in the making but that isn't how long I have spent on this piece sorry to say.

Anyways, [info]rachelholkner requested A girl with crazy hair and a pet aardvark.
I have done the best I can. I am very happy with the aardvark but I don't know what crazy hair looks like so I improvised. I hope it's crazy enough for you Rachel.

I promise not to take so long this time.

Anyone out there with an idea for me to draw something?

It's been a long time coming and for that I apologise.

I managed to get my hands on Corel Painter X which was very exciting . I thought would be fun and make things a little quicker and easier.
Unfortunately I spent way too much time playing with different filters here, brush styles there and generally finding my way around the program. It was fun but I was getting no closer to a finished piece the more I fiddled so I had to bite the bullet and do something and move on and this is the result.

[info]crankynick requested a writing desk with a raven on it. Obviously a celebration of Edgar Allen Poe, I did what I could.
I did a coloured version first trying all watercolour and paint techniques and then applied a bunch of filters on the image trying to get the Poe era look going on.

I hope it was worth the wait.

OK, The less said about the previous one the better so lets get going on the next one.

Anyone out there got any ideas that don't involve me as an Oompa Loompa?

A bit rushed in the end and somehow I ended up looking like a He-man action figure, I don't know what happened there.

Best not to dwell on it really.

Lets just move on to the next one shall we.

Ballet dancing flying monkeys was asked for by [info]girliejones  and ballet dancing flying monkeys is done.

Not what I really wanted to do, I had some funky ideas but time was dragging and I wasn't going to get around to it soon enough so I whipped up these quickly to keep things moving.

Because I deal in vector artwork all the time this was a lot easier for me than actually drawing something. There is an awful lot of copying and pasting going on.

Anyways, enjoy your ballet dancing flying monkeys.

[info]random_alex suggested I draw 'Frogs. With bandanas. And a light saber.'
I opted for one frog and almost forgot the bandana, I bet you wouldn't have guessed it was a last minute add-on if I didn't tell you. :)

Sorry for the delay peoples, that pesky thing called work got in the way and I only had the sketch done by last night and i really wanted to have a go at colouring this baby.

I am still learning some of the programs and the Wacom tablet but I am pretty happy with some aspects of the pic but I did overdo the highlights and shadows, whats the saying "less is more". Gotta keep that in mind in the future.

What I learnt from doing the picture is pretty cool though. I set myself up for these challenges to push myself and I have done that so far, I am hoping the art improves greatly but the learning curve for some of the software has been steep and rewarding. So far so good. I am getting a kick out of it, I hope you guys are too.

I am including the pre-rendered version aswell.

Any comments or criticisms greatly appreciated.

[info]_aaronj  requested

"I'd like to see a picture of a monkey feeding something inappropriate to a baby.

It should be cute, but kinda wrong at the same time.

Maybe there should be some broken glass or explosives in the background."

I didn't have time to colour it but am happy with the idea if not the drawing itself..

I tried to draw as cute but it came off a little more not-cute but I did manage to include some high explosive in there for you.

OK, one down, lets keep ths thing moving, first person in with a suggestion gets some sort of artistic representation done for them.

If anyone else would like to throw ideas in for the piece they are more than welcome but I am not promising anything.  If it's something you really want, save it for another day when you are the first to post.  If it's something you really want done well, wait a few months or go to another blog.

If you have no idea what I am going on about, it's all explained here

Firstly, apologies for the size, I will try and figure out how to put it under the cut for next time.

OK, here is my first attempt at creating a piece of art based on your suggestions.

I managed to incorporate a bunny, a tank and pants. Sorry GJ i couldn't manage any flying monkeys.

I am not too pleased with it, I bit off more than I could chew in believing I could do a quick sketch, scan it into the computer and make it look all pretty using computer magic. Obviously that didn't happen. Don't worry, we can only get better from here.

Not all pics are going to be produced like this either, I will be mixing it up a bit depending on my mood as to whether it be inks, pencils or digital.

I will call this piece a learning experience because I learn't a hell of a lot this time around.

1 - DO NOT draw small and enlarge in the scan
2 - You should really practice with a Wacom tablet first.
3 - This takes longer than I thought
4- I learnt a lot about CorelDraw which will make life a lot easier in the future

Anyways, now that's behind us, lets look forward to improvement with the next one.

12:12 pm - A new year, a new manifesto
G'day and welcome to 2009.

It's my first day back and work and it's only taken me 4 hours to start procrastinating.

I have been rather upset at myself lately that I have let my drawing skills deteriorate of late through lack of use. To be honest they weren't much chop before hand but are far less than they were. there was a time when if I was sitting down and I had a pen and some paper handy I couldn't help but doodle, now if I try to actively draw and I come up blank which I am finding a tad frustrating.

So in an act of ambition and good intentions I am planning on bring the art back into my life and you guys in LJland are going to hopefully help me.

I am taking some inspiration from [info]martinlivings  Tuesday 10 minute tales where he gets 3 ideas from readers posting in his comments page, he goes off and writes a short story incorporating those elements.

I will be doing the same thing in asking for ideas from anyone who reads this LJ.
I will put a call out for an idea for something to draw and the first reply will get the Mitch+art=awesome action.

Now, like I said, my art skills were not that great to begin with and they are very rusty now so don't be expecting anything special or good for that matter but hopefully what we will get is by the end of the year and great collection of pieces which show a transition of improvement. Keeping this in mind, some days I may just not have the artistic mojo rising and the best I can manage is a few stick figures but bear with me, hopefully those days are few and far between.

I intend to do this every weekday but cannot guarantee I will be able to keep to that sort of commitment but I am planning on doing it as often as I can. If I have been quiet for too long, don't be afraid to poke me with a big stick and get me moving again.

So to stop putting this off any longer, I put it out to you for the first suggestion as to what to draw, and please keep your suggestions in the realms of my ability and with the knowledge that I will be doing this at work so nothing too elaborate or time consuming with suggestions like the battle of Gettysburg from the perspective of a fresh faced 16 year old soldiers first exposure to the tragedy of war.

Thank you for your time.

And I was so close to being Dr Doom too, he's my favorite, maybe I should have kept trying the test until I got him, thats what a real Super Villain would have done.

9:29 pm - In case there was any doubt
Guess which super hero I am?

You Are Superman

Faster than a speeding bullet, more powerful than a locomotive, and able to leap tall buildings in a single bound.
And pretty cute too. No wonder you're the most popular superhero ever!

8:33 am - Because everyone else is doing it.
Here's my Tarot card.

You are The Emperor

Stability, power, protection, realization; a great person.

The Emperor is the great authority figure of the Tarot, so it represents
fathers, father-figures and employers. There is a lot of aggression and violence
too.

The Emperor naturally follows the Empress. Like an infant, he is filled with enthuiasm, energy, aggression. He is direct, guileless and all too often irresistible. Unfortunately, like a baby he can also be a tyrant. Impatient, demanding, controlling. In the best of circumstances, he signifies the leader that everyone wants to follow, sitting on a throne that indicates the solid foundation of an Empire he created, loves and rules with intelligence and enthusiasm. But that throne can also be a trap, a responsibility that has the Emperor feeling restless, bored and discontent.

9:31 am - How to spend $200 before breakfast
I had been debating a lot lately about buying a Nintendo DS lite and finally decided on the weekend that I wasn't going to wait til Xmas or anything like that, I was just going to bite the bullet and buy it.

So last night I had the time to go down to K mart which is open till Midnight during the week and see what they had in the way of DS's. They were there fro $200 and they had a reasonable selection of games. I was all prepared to part with my hard earned when the shop assistant told me that there is a sale that starts tomorrow where for the same price you will get a free game with it. Well it wasn't hard to make the decision not to purchase it there and then, I can wait that little bit longer and went home.

Obviously I couldn't wait too much longer because I was at the same K Mart at 7:30 this morning buying the DS with the free game which was one of the Nintendogs games which really isn't a game, more of a dog simulator, but it was free, so I am not complaining.

It's sitting there now, charging, taunting me, begging me to play with it. I don't know how much longer I can hold out.

Mitch
